Turban Materials
The Turban originated from the Rajput tradition and was later widely adopted across Northern and Southern India by various states and regions, including the Sikhs, Mughals, and Marathas. It was worn by Sikh Gurus, as well as numerous kings and emperors throughout history. Associated with royalty and aristocracy, the turban symbolised authority, kingship, leadership, warrior status and elegance.
The Dastaar holds great significance in the Sikh religion and is worn by all baptised Sikhs today. Since the time of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the practice of wearing the Dastaar has been highly important throughout the lineage of the Gurus. Guru Gobind Singh Ji emphasised that all Sikhs should maintain uncut hair and blessed them with the Dastaar to tie and cover their hair, solidifying its role in Sikh identity.
Rubia
Rubia fabric is typically woven with thicker yarns, which give it a denser and more substantial texture. This added thickness makes it tear-resistant, robust, and ideal for those who prefer a more structured look. Furthermore, Rubia fabric is known for its softness despite its thickness, and it tends to be firm, making it less likely to wrinkle. This unique property is especially appreciated for turbans, as it helps maintain their shape throughout the day, as well as allowing greater comfort.
Full Voile
Made from 100% cotton or sometimes blended with linen, full voile is known for its soft texture and semi-transparent appearance. It is one of the most popular choices for turbans because of its breathable, airy quality. Compared to other materials like Rubia or F74, full voile is softer and less dense. This makes it easier to wrap into neat layers and gives the turban a more graceful, flowing appearance. The fabric is durable yet light, making it an excellent choice for those who prioritise comfort while maintaining an elegant look.
Malmal / F74
The Malmal or F74 material is composed of 100% cotton. It is one of the thinnest fabrics available, known for its softness and fine texture. Often used in turbans, especially the Dumalla style worn by Sikhs, F74 cotton is highly favoured because of its comfort and ability to be layered easily without becoming too heavy. Its high twist yarns contribute to its durability while maintaining its lightweight feel.
